Persistent coughing
Persistent wheezing is another common symptom of this disease. A thin layer of mucus is present in healthy airways and is responsible for assisting the body in the removal of dirt and bacteria. In addition, a person with cystic fibrosis has a very thick mucus layer that produces lung congestion and wheezing. Consequently, the individual endures from coughing. Additionally, wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath can be symptoms of a lung infection. These infections can become so severe that the patient may spend several weeks a year in the hospital.
