Oxygen therapy
It involves attaching a mask or nasal prongs to a portable oxygen canister, which then delivers oxygen to the lungs. There are currently no specific guidelines for the appropriate use of long-term therapy in humans, and the benefits of these treatments are poorly supported. However, the treatment has its role in the treatment of lung disease on a short-term basis. As with cystic fibrosis, the patient has extreme difficulty breathing, and significant lung injury can result in hypoxemia, or low oxygen saturation. The individual with hypoxemia has poor sleep, muscle mass loss, and decreased exercise tolerance. Consequently, long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) is required.
