Diabetes
Individuals with cystic fibrosis also have diabetes. The pancreas is responsible for manufacturing insulin, which is required for the body to utilise its own glucose. The viscous, sticky mucus scars the pancreas, preventing it from producing a normal amount of insulin and increasing the risk of diabetes. These individuals can produce insulin.
Deficient, their pancreas still produces insulin, but in insufficient quantities to maintain normal body function.
Diabetes is prevalent among these patients, as it affects 20 percent of adolescents and 40 to 50 percent of adults.
