Damaged airways
Bronchiectasis is a condition in which the airways of the lungs become abnormally tortuous and allow mucous to accumulate, making the lungs more susceptible to infection. Among the primary causes of bronchiectasis, a chronic lung condition characterised by abnormal widening and scarring of the airways, is cystic fibrosis. When the entire lung and airway area is blocked by mucus and infection, it is extremely difficult to breathe in and out of the lungs and clear mucus from the bronchial passages, resulting in bronchitis. It also causes a persistent cough that produces mucus.
