Vaginitis
Vaginitis is an infection and inflammation of the vagina, as its name suggests. Vaginitis is a more severe infection that can cause discharge with an offensive odour, discomfort, and itching. Typically, a minor change in the pH of the vagina, a bacterial infection, or an imbalance of vaginal bacteria is the underlying cause. Vaginitis can also be caused by skin disorders and decreased oestrogen levels during and after menopause.
These are the three most common forms of vaginal infections:
Yeast infections are a form of vaginitis that is typically caused by the fungus Candida albicans.
Bacterial vaginosis – An infection of the vagina resulting from an imbalance in the vagina’s normal bacterial flora. It is caused by the proliferation of other organisms.
Trichomoniasis – It is a form of vaginitis caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. The most prevalent vaginal infections are typically transmitted through sexual contact.
