Reduced Muscle Tone
Due to a deficiency of motor neurons, the infants with SMA type 1 have weaker and thinner musculature. The loss of muscle strength causes the extremities to become flaccid and limp. There is a lack of flexibility, and the children cannot sit without assistance; they are less active and unable to lift their heads due to muscular weakness, and their wasting worsens over time. Occasionally, there is pain, numbness, and swelling, as well as muscle atrophy. As a consequence of spinal muscular atrophy, the patient’s suffering is accompanied by the development of muscle weakness and malnutrition. Malnutrition also causes muscle mass to deteriorate, resulting in a loss of muscle tone.
