Breathing Problems
Spinal muscular atrophy poses a grave threat to human health because it weakens the muscles involved in respiration. Patients with SMA develop severe respiratory complications because the lungs’ functions are compromised as a result of the spine’s curvature pressing on organs in the thoracic cavity. In neonates with spinal muscular atrophy, lung development is abnormal, making them more susceptible to respiratory infections. Patients with SMA develop a feeble cough and hypoventilation, which disrupts daily life and leads to sleeping difficulties.
