Breathing assistance
Breathing assistance is essential for patients with spinal muscular atrophy due to breathing difficulties caused by impaired pulmonary function. Some of the programs for respiratory assistance involve the use of a suction machine, which aids in breathing. The purpose of the suction machine is to clear the respiratory tract by sucking excess mucous from the trachea, which may explain why the airways are obstructed. A tiny plastic tube is inserted down the patient’s esophagus to remove excess mucus and clear the airway, allowing for uninterrupted breathing. In addition, the SMA patient can attempt breathing exercises, which are extremely beneficial for relaxing the muscles involved in respiration. In addition to easing the patient’s coughing, the breathing exercises alleviate the patient’s respiratory difficulties. In severe cases of SMA, the patient may require a mask or tube-like device to assist with respiration. The SMA patient must receive vaccinations to prevent respiratory infections like pneumonia and flu.
