Other molecular assays

Other molecular assays, such as reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), can aid in the identification of influenza viral RNA in respiratory specimens with very high precision and sensitivity. Some of the molecular assays can detect and distinguish between influenza virus A and influenza virus B infections. In addition, other assays can identify specific seasonal influenza A subtypes. In approximately 1 to 8 hours, the results of the molecular assays are obtained.
