Serologic Testing

Combining convalescent and acute sera is necessary for the routine testing of serological samples against influenza viruses. The serum from patients with susceptible influenza symptoms is not typically the first recommendation of medical professionals when testing for influenza virus-specific antibodies. Clinical decision-making is not aided by the results of serological testing. Serologic testing is only available in a handful of research or public health laboratories. It is difficult to interpret the results of serological specimens for antibodies on a single specimen. The physicians recommend only using serological testing for investigations and research related to public health.
