Herpes: Symptoms and Causes. Treatment and prevention

Herpes Treatment (Home Remedies)

Herpes can be treated with a variety of options, including home remedies and dietary changes.

Home Remedies

Herpes blisters can be relieved by a number of home remedies. Try applying these remedies to the sores for relief:

  • Make a paste with cornstarch, baking soda or water
  • Aloe Vera
  • Cold or warm compress
  • Oils such as eucalyptus or tea tree (always dilute first with a carrier)

According to some research, consuming a daily lysine supplement could also help prevent herpes outbreaks. The dosage estimation may vary, but consuming between 1 and 3 gram of lysine per day seems to be beneficial for managing symptoms and limiting recurrent outbreaks. Most people can relieve herpes symptoms by taking the following:

  • Aloe vera gel can be applied to the sores
  • Water from a bottle can be squirted onto the blisters in order to reduce the pain when urinating
  • Cornstarch can be used to treat the affected areas.

No research has been done to determine whether or not these remedies work. You could also try:

  • Applying lidocaine-containing lotions or creams to the urethra prior to urination
  • Apply petroleum jelly to the affected areas
  • Take pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen
  • Avoid irritation by wearing loose clothing
  • Take a bath in salted water, or soak in a warm sitz-bath
  • Use protection when you are sexually active, but only if symptoms have disappeared.

Using ice packs can be helpful for some people. Wrap ice in a towel before applying it directly to your skin.
