Included in this group are:
Radioactive Iodine
Radioactive iodine is one treatment for Graves’ disease. In this treatment, the patient consumes a radioactive substance that destroys their thyroid gland. In most cases, this therapy is very effective at treating Graves’ disease and it has minimal side effects.
Radiation exposure may increase the risk for developing other cancers later in life. Patients should therefore discuss with their doctor the benefits and risks of radioactive-iodine treatment before deciding to receive the treatment.
Antithyroid medication
Graves disease is treated with anti-thyroid medication. This condition occurs when the thyroid gland makes too much thyroid hormone. Methimazole, also known as Tapazole, is the most common anti-thyroid drug. It inhibits thyroid hormone production. Anti-thyroid medication is also used to treat Graves’ disease. This condition occurs when the body produces antibodies which bind and activate the gland. It causes it to produce excessive thyroid hormone. These medications include:
Propylthiouracil
Propylthiouracil can be used to treat Graves’ disease. It works by blocking thyroid hormone production. Propylthiouracil is often prescribed with other medications such as anti-thyroid or beta blockers.
Propylthiouracil can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Propylthiouracil must be taken exactly as prescribed by a doctor.
Methimazole
Methimazole helps control thyroid hormone production. It is usually prescribed to people who have Graves’ Disease. It can improve symptoms like fatigue, weight gain and breathing difficulties.
Methimazole, while not a cure for Graves disease, can be helpful in controlling symptoms. Working closely with your doctor will help you find the right dosage and treatment plan.
Corticosteroids
Corticosteroids suppress the immune response. These medications are used to treat autoimmune diseases like Graves’ disease because they reduce inflammation and swelling.
Although they can cause unwanted side effects such as weight gain, mood changes, and high blood-pressure, corticosteroids are generally a safe, effective, and cost-effective way to treat Graves’ disease. Prednisone, a corticosteroid medicine that reduces inflammation, is used to treat Graves disease. Prednisone is used to treat autoimmune diseases such as lupus and graves’ disease.
Beta Blockers
Beta blockers can be used as medications to control symptoms of Graves Disease. These drugs work by blocking adrenaline. This medication helps to reduce symptoms and slow down heart rate.
Propranolol, a beta-blocker, can be used to help control thyroid overactivity. This medication is not a cure, but can help manage symptoms.
