Graves Disease Diet: Foods To Avoid
People with graves’ disease should not consume large quantities of certain foods. (9). These include:
Too Much Iodized Salt
This is a table salt fortified with Iodine. Iodine, a trace mineral, is necessary for thyroid hormone production. Too much iodized sodium can also be harmful to the thyroid gland, and trigger graves’ disease. Even though iodine occurs naturally in certain foods like seafood, people who eat foods high in iodine have a higher risk of developing graves disease.
Seaweed
Graves disease patients should avoid consuming foods high in iodine. Thyroid glands are stimulated to produce TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone), which then produces high levels of thyroid hormonal. The iodine content of seaweeds such as nori or kombu is high, so they are not recommended for people with graves disease.
Gluten
Gluten can exacerbate this condition, so those who have graves’ disease should avoid it. Gluten is a type of protein that can be found in wheat barley and rye. Gluten can cause intestinal inflammation and result in problems like diarrhea, constipation and bloating. Gluten can trigger an immune reaction that causes inflammation in the entire body for people with graves’ disease.
Many foods are gluten-free and suitable for people with Graves’ disease. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins are all good choices.
Caffeinated beverages
Graves disease patients should avoid drinking caffeinated drinks. Caffeine increases blood pressure and heart rate, which are not good for people with heart conditions. Caffeine is also a diuretic and can lead to dehydration. Dehydration is a concern for those with graves’ disease because it can worsen symptoms.
