Foot Pain Medications
The doctor may prescribe certain medications to the patient after treating the acute pain complaint. These drugs can help control the underlying causes of pain. Each medicine relieves pain differently, and is effective for different types.
Analgesics do not contain narcotics. Analgesics can treat pain caused by cramps. Analgesics can be used to treat acute pain. These analgesics are either taken orally, or can be applied as creams. These medicines are used primarily to relieve pain. They do not reduce inflammation. These medications are used to treat foot sprains, and swelling.
- Topical analgesics
Topical analgesics are creams or gels that can be applied topically. These painkillers penetrate the skin’s inner layers and relieve pain. Some work by blocking pain signals to the brain. Others work by changing the way the brain interprets pain.
- Oral analgesics:
Orally, these medications are used to treat systemic inflammation.
- NSAIDs:
NSAIDs are a class of medications that may be easily available. Prostaglandins increase pain and inflammation during an injury. This prostaglandin can be synthesized by the enzyme cyclooxygenase. NSAIDs inhibit the function of prostaglandins by blocking the production of cyclooxygenase. NSAIDs include:
- Ibuprofen
- Naproxen
- Aspirin
When consuming NSAID, one should be careful because it can have certain side effects.
- Injections
- Headaches
- Drowsiness
- Cortisone Shot:
Injections of cortisone are an effective non-surgical treatment for foot pain. Artificially synthesized corticosteroids reduce inflammation. They reduce pain and inflammation at the injury site. Chronic pain is treated with cortisone injections. These injections are only to be used with a doctor’s prescription. Inflammation can often work against the body’s own natural defense system. Cortisone injections reduce inflammation by suppressing immune system activity. Cortisone injections can have a number of side effects.
- Vein puncture
- Cartilage damage
- Hyaluronic injection:
The body naturally produces hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid injections can be used to treat bunions and arthritis. They are also effective for treating sprained or twisted ankles, plantar fasciitis, and sprained feet. Injecting hyaluronic into the joints is a nonsurgical procedure. Hyaluronic Acid improves the lubrication of the joints and promotes muscle and tendon growth. It reacts with the water in the joints and muscles of the feet to produce a viscous fluid that increases mobility and encourages growth.
- Nerve Blocks:
Injections of nerve block can be used for minor or chronic foot problems. These nerve blocks stop the injured side from sending signals to the brain, reducing pain perception. These nerve blocks are used to numb a foot prior to surgery.
- Nerve pain medicines:
NSAIDs, analgesics, and other painkillers cannot treat nerve-related pain. Antidepressant medications can be used to treat these types of foot pain. They slow down nerve transmission.
