Self-administration of Alprostadil via injection

The self-injection procedure permits a patient to inject alprostadil directly into the side or base of his penis using a fine needle. Infrequently, physicians typically combine penile injections with medications for other conditions. Combination medications such as phentolamine and alprostadil are examples. Sometimes, these combination medications are referred to as bimix if they contain two medications or trimix if they contain three. Each injection dose produces an erection that lasts no longer than one hour, as the needle is very delicate and the injection site causes minimal discomfort. Rarely, fibrous tissue formation can occur at the injection site, and priapism, a prolonged erection, can occur.
