Therapy For Anorexia Nervosa

The treatment for anorexia nervosa focuses on regaining weight and restoring normal nutrition and weight control behaviors. Evaluation and treatment of any co-occurring medical or psychiatric conditions is a crucial element of the treatment plan. As part of the nutritional plan, individuals should be encouraged to overcome eating anxiety and ingest a variety of foods with differing calorie densities at frequent intervals. By following a correct treatment plan, parents can be trained to monitor and assist their child’s diet. Body dissatisfaction must also be addressed, although this can be more challenging than addressing weight and dietary choices.

When outpatient treatment is ineffectual for severe anorexia nervosa, inpatient or residential behavioral specialty programs may be recommended. The majority of specialty programs can restore weight loss and dietary practices, but the risk of relapse in the first year after program completion remains significant.
