Binge Eating Syndrome
Binge eating disorder is characterized by episodes of binge eating in which individuals consume large quantities of food in a brief amount of time, experience a loss of control over their eating habits, and feel anxious about their binge behavior. In contrast to individuals with bulimia nervosa, they do not engage in compensatory behaviors to eliminate excess food, such as vomiting, fasting, excessive exercise, or laxative abuse. Chronic binge eating is associated with obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, among other severe health complications.
Frequent binges (at least once per week for three months) accompanied by a loss of control and three or more of the following symptoms are diagnostic of spree eating disorder.
