Alzheimer’s Disease
In addition to having an association with old age, these two conditions share numerous other similarities. Consistent with the ageing process, Alzheimer’s disease can produce epilepsy through structural brain changes. Alzheimer’s disease is also associated with tissue chemical deposition. This suggests that epilepsy is associated with a chemical change in nature. Epilepsy is a late complication of Alzheimer’s, appearing after the disease has progressed for many years. Epilepsy occurs in approximately 10-22% of Alzheimer’s patients. Cognitive impairment is a shared consequence of both of these diseases. This consequence of one disease can act as a catalyst for the other.
