Head Trauma
Head trauma may result in cerebral injury. Adults are more likely to sustain traumatic head injuries in roadside incidents. Fall-related injuries can also occur among the elderly. Babies and infants may sustain head injuries as a result of falls, child maltreatment, or sports injuries. Such an external force can cause bleeding within the confines of the cranium, between the various layers covering the brain, or within the brain’s spaces. One form of seizure may occur immediately after a traumatic brain injury, while the other may have a delayed onset. The diagnosis of epilepsy is more commonly associated with the latter.
Brain trauma can cause lesions or other disruptions of the neural currents that induce seizures. If this injury causes a persistent disturbance, the patient may develop epilepsy.
