The hygiene hypothesis

This hypothesis provides a possible explanation for the increase of diverse allergies in developing nations. Allergies are a hyperactive form of the immune system. It is hypothesised that decreased exposure to the pathogen population in developed nations accounts for this hyperactivity. The immune system does not become accustomed to dealing with common pathogens in a controlled manner; rather, it exhibits a frenetic response upon exposure.
