De-Sensitization
It is not a treatment, but rather a preventive strategy that permits minimal allergen exposure in order to desensitise the immune system to a specific allergen. This method is utilised when there is an immediate need to administer a substance to a patient who is allergic to it. Small quantities of allergen, insufficient to cause a full-blown anaphylactic reaction, are administered for this purpose. There is only localised activation of inflammatory cells, which cannot provoke a systemic response. This allows for the drug to be administered in modest doses at appropriate intervals.
