Mechanism behind anaphylaxis
The mechanism underlying the onset of anaphylaxis can be immunologic or non-immunologic. Essentially, both mechanisms involve the release of various chemical mediators from mast cells and basophils, which are inflammatory cells. This chemical discharge can be mediated by the antibody Ig E. This is an instantaneous hypersensitivity reaction. In some instances, allergens can directly trigger the release of compounds from mast cells, bypassing the immunologic pathway involving immunoglobulin Ig E.
Hypersensitivity implies that a reaction is stimulated in response to normally tolerable compounds or agents. In these individuals, allergens cause the immune system to activate a defence mechanism or allergy.
