More often than not, gastrointestinal symptoms are associated with food allergies, and they may become significantly worse in anaphylaxis. The prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms in anaphylaxis is approximately 45%.
Along with other signs and symptoms, discomfort may be an initial or warning sign.
Abdominal cramps may cause the patient to double over in agony.

All gastrointestinal symptoms result from the stimulation of gastrointestinal smooth muscle contraction by the mediators. Intense contractions result in discomfort. It can also result in diarrhoea, which is characterised by incomplete food assimilation and increased food mobility within the digestive tract, which explains the increased frequency and fluidity of stools.
