Social Isolation
Social isolation is a characteristic of social anxiety. In this case, the sufferers fear individuals or situations that may occur in public. A number of other human characteristics, such as prejudice, low self-esteem, and peer pressure, etc., can also cause patients to avoid social gatherings. This serves as a type of defense mechanism.
Even in other forms of anxiety, such as generalized anxiety disorder, patients may experience discomfort in social situations. It is most prevalent among adolescents and young adults. A heightened awareness of one’s own thought process may cause the patient to feel out of place in social situations. Social stigma associated with mental illness further delineates a line that patients dare not cross.
