Foods to avoid
There are indications that the consumption of particular categories of foods may exacerbate gout attacks. Plant and animal foods contain purines, which may exacerbate the condition of gout sufferers. As the body converts these purines into uric acid, consuming purine-containing substances can lead to an increase in uric acid levels in the blood. Vegetable consumption in moderate quantities per meal can help reduce uric acid levels in gout patients. A study indicates that consuming animal-based foods with high purine content may increase the likelihood of developing gout. However, consuming purine-containing plant-based diets does not have the same effect. As full-fat dairy products also appear to increase blood uric acid levels, the researchers conclude that consumption of these products is also safe for gout patients. Although consuming low-fat dairy products can aid in preventing the onset and progression of gout, it is not a cure. The following foods contain purines, and gout sufferers must reduce or at least limit their consumption:
Organ and red meats
Rich in purines, organ meats such as liver, kidney, sweetbread and brains raise uric acid levels in the blood. Red meat such as beef, mutton, bison, and venison can also increase blood uric acid levels and exacerbate gout symptoms.
