Chronic Tophaceous Gout
Chronic tophaceous gout is the most debilitating form of the disease. The kidneys and joints are both susceptible to permanent injury. Patients with chronic arthritis may develop large nodules of uric acid crystals and tophi in cooler areas of the body, such as the joints of the digits. Doctors estimate that it may take up to ten years for these large masses to develop following the onset of chronic tophaceous gout. It is extremely unlikely that a patient receiving appropriate treatment will develop chronic tophaceous gout.
