Acute gout occurs when uric acid crystals accumulate in the joints, causing sudden, intense pain and acute edoema. The rapid onset of gout symptoms, including intense pain and acute inflammation, is referred to as an attack or flare-up. Typically, the symptoms of a gout attack subside within 3 to 10 days. Alcohol consumption, stressful situations, frigid weather, as well as drugs, can sometimes precipitate an attack of gout.
