Diet
Obesity and unhealthy food appear to be associated with macular degeneration as well. A study conducted in August 2001 revealed that unhealthy food may have detrimental effects on eyesight. The high-fat foods can increase the risk of AMD. Monounsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, and linoleic acid are fat categories associated with a higher risk of eye diseases.
The results of a second study involving 349 participants between the ages of 55 and 80 revealed that processed junk food is associated with an increased risk of developing advanced AMD.
White rice, bread and pasta, which are low in antioxidants and have a high glycemic index, raise blood sugar levels and increase the risk of AMD.
Given the findings of numerous studies on the association between food and macular degeneration, it is advised to avoid snacking and foods that are highly processed. Despite the increased focus on foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, they reduce the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration.
