Targeted Therapy

Brain tumors can also be treated with targeted therapy. Angiogenesis inhibitors are used in this therapy. Angiogenesis is the formation of new blood vessel. Angiogenesis is a process that promotes tumor growth and reproduction. The tumor grows larger and requires more oxygen and nutrients. This triggers angiogenesis which leads to the production of new blood vessels.
Angiogenesis inhibitors are used in targeted therapy to stop the production of new blood vessel. It helps to stop the growth of new cancer cells by stopping the blood supply which supports and feeds the tumor cells. The tumor cannot receive enough oxygen and nutrients from the blood when the blood vessels that are linked to it are destroyed. This lack of blood supply shrinks the tumor and slows its growth. This therapy doesn’t completely destroy the tumor.
It does not cause many side effects because it only affects the growth of tumor cells. Side effects can include:
- Diarrhea
- Heart attack
- High blood pressure
- Blood Clotting
