Types of brain tumors

There are different types of brain tumours that can be classified based on their location, structure and stage. [ 4 ]
- Primary brain tumors:
Primary brain tumors are abnormal cell growths in the brain or nearby sites. Primary brain tumors are most commonly found in the brain, meninges that protect the brain and spinal cord, as well as the vessels that supply blood to brain. The primary tumor can be cancerous or not, but it is a problem when the pressure builds up on the surrounding nerves and tissue. Any primary benign tumor can be completely recovered from.
- Secondary brain tumours:
Secondary brain tumors are caused by cancer that has spread from another part of the body to the brain. These tumors occur more frequently than primary tumors. Cancer cells can travel to other parts of the human body via the blood. The cerebral hemispheres and cerebellum are the most common sites. The treatment of secondary brain tumours is difficult, and in most cases there is no full recovery. Lung, breast, liver and other cancers are the most common ones that can spread to your brain.
