Causes of Brain Tumors
There are several causes and risk factors for brain tumors, including
Radiation
Radiation is one of the major environmental factors that can cause cancer. Radiation therapy can be used to treat invasive tumors that are not surgically excisable. Radiation therapy used to treat one type of tumor may paradoxically cause another to develop in the same area. This occurrence is rare, according to a study that examined the incidence and latency period of radiation-induced tumors in the brain. The latency period for patients with this type of tumor was reported to be 13 years. It is rare but can be deadly.
A person can also be exposed to radiation by working near a nuclear power plant or in factories that emit radiation. Radiation from diagnostic methods like CT scans is not yet proven to cause brain tumors. As a precaution doctors do not use radiation techniques on children or pregnant women.
