Appendicitis – Symptoms and Causes. Diagnosis. Home remedies. Medications. Complications. Prevention.

List of Appendicitis medications

Appendicitis can be treated with a few prescription drugs. There are several medications that can be used to treat appendicitis. These include painkillers, anti-inflammatory drugs, and antibiotics. (7)

  • Antibiotics The most common medication to treat this condition is antibiotics. Antibiotics are able to help clear any appendix infection. Recent studies suggest that antibiotics can be a good treatment for appendicitis. In a study of more than 1000 patients, those treated with antibiotics had fewer surgical procedures than those not receiving treatment. In the study, the use of antibiotics was found to reduce the risk of surgery in patients by 26%. These preliminary findings suggest that antibiotics could be an alternative to surgery in some appendicitis patients.
  • Painkillers Appendicitis typically is treated with surgery and antibiotics. Painkillers can also be used to relieve the pain associated with appendicitis. NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen and naproxen (nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs), are commonly used to relieve pain in appendicitis. These drugs reduce inflammation and ease pain.
  • Antiinflammatory medications – In some cases, anti-inflammatory drugs can be used for appendicitis. Ibuprofen, also known as dexibuprofen, and naproxen are the two most common medications used to treat appendicitis. These medications can reduce pain and inflammation until surgery is performed. These medications may also prevent infection.
