Some individuals with atopic dermatitis can live with pets in their homes, while others cannot tolerate animals without itching. Pets do not cause eczema, but they can contribute to its exacerbation if you already have it.
The situation. The allergens pet dander and dead skin cells can induce eczema. Pet saliva and urine contain proteins that can also induce atopic dermatitis symptoms. Studies indicate that children who grew up with canines are more likely to develop eczema. The logical explanation for this is that exposure to pathogens strengthens the immune system, and since excessive immune activation is believed to cause atopic dermatitis, the two are related. Especially if an adult or child is allergic to a cat or dog, living with one increases the likelihood that they will develop dermatitis. However, it is crucial to determine whether the condition is due to a pet allergy or a medication in order to control it in a timely manner.
