John realized that he could not abandon the wolf. The animal could die from exposure. This trap was still able to capture small animals because it had no teeth. It was a bit like a handcuff, as the wolf could not escape. John had to figure out how to free him.
The Dangerous Creature
The trap doesn’t harm the coyotes or wolves, but once they’re free they’re not happy. A lone wolf is unlikely to attack humans. However, a wolf that has been trapped can be very aggressive. John had to be cautious if he managed to free the animal, as it might not have realized that he was there only to help.
